After thinking about this for a while, I talked to Brian Browell about this too, Why can't all the indexes be dropped .50 and start the CIC at that point.
I have wated and loved Comp racing for 20 years and I watch they people get up and leave. Last year at Indy I asked a few of the people why. The number one response was they didn't understand what was going on. Now I did get the chance to explain it to two guys who then loved it. But here is my thought. This Doesn't really effect anyone, only the appearance of the class to the public. I don't race in Comp, I can't afford it. I do race a Super Comp dragster that actually sees mostly bracket races. I just wonder what anyone else thinks about this. Brian said he liked it, but said NHRA would never do it.

My Question would be.. What difference would it make?? None.. Accept you'd have a ton of cars Not able to get to the index.. it's a little disheartening when you spend 150 grand to race and can't hit the index.. How about lowering the Super comp index a second or so most of the 180 Plus MPH cars can run 7's easy anyway.. Same thing would happen the guys that couldn't run that fast would be gone.. My Point is I think you would lose racers. The only real advantage to doing that, is that the classes look faster to the fans. But how many fans know the index's anyway..

All I was meaning is that you wouldn't have to hit the index.
that would be like the other classes in drag racing where you get penalized for going quicker. If you had a 9.00 index now and can run to 8.500 now the index is 8.50 what is different other than the appearance to make it easier for the crowd to understand. ( I don't use fan, I use crowd since a fan knows what is going on)
Every comp racer wants more tv and exposure. Why not make it easier to understand.
As far as Super Comp that would be fine but it would take me out.
My car is a 317ci sbc with a single 4bbl and a glide. the car was raced in C/ED till we couldn't afford it any more. I have enough trouble with the bbc and high mph cars.

I completely understand what you are saying. My point was that lowering the index's won't make comp any easier to understand from a crowd point of view.. But to a NEW racer looking at running comp the index's may look unatainable(sp?) Then they do exactly what you did and run Super comp or super gas.. and I realize that you wouldn't have to hit the index to qualify, but lets face it Nobody will be happy with Not being able to run the index.. If anything the way to attract racers to the class is to Raise the index's a tenth or so, But thats never going to happen.. and as far as TV time goes Hell comp doesn't even get air time on the sportsman episode of NHRA drag racing.. unless it's a heads up class it's not going to get TV time.. It sucks but it's true.. If you were going to reduce the indexs I'd prefer the old system where you ran off of the National Record..

I understand I like everone else wants Comp racing to get the respect it deserves.
Thank you for listening and giving some feed back. That is all I really wanted.

I've thought about this as well and it does seem like a good idea to eliminate sandbagging, but there is one major flaw. If we drop .50 off all the classes then the soft classes will stay soft forever (or at least, for a major long time), and the hard classes have no chance of being competitive. At least now, in theory the soft classes will eventually be brough back in line (although its debatable how good that's working).

For an example of a really stiff class, take C or D/A. Charlie Greco set the record in D at 7.76, which is -.60 under. In either class, it's a major, major accomplishment to run .50 - .60 under.

Now compare that to the -.80+ under runs Brogdons cars just made. If we take .50 off the index, that gives Brogdon's cars more then 2 tenths for free, that he never has to worry about losing from hitting the index.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the concept of working hard to make your car fast; but in some classes its impossible to attain the same levels of performance of other classes. At least the way it is, hopefully the softer classes will even themselves out after awhile.

I'm guessing that with this that they would have CIC start at .10 under instead of .60 under to compensate for the .50 index reduction...

Yeah, now that I re-read it that's the impression I get too. I guess I overlooked the "dropped .50 and start the CIC at that point." LOL

Trying to "fix" com is what screwed Comp all up in the first place...
    Giving back index...is ridiculous...
if everyone would leave the indexes alone...all the soft classes will eventually come around...
it is all the people complaining about how hard their class is and that they are not competitive any more...if you ran it...you own it!
if your class sucks...change classes! If you don’t like comp...Run super comp.
People spend tons of money to set the bar in comp...Then other people complain that their tired old junk from the mid 80's cant run more than 50 under...step up!
All comp need is for NHRA to stop making ridiculously soft classes every couple of years...and to stop changing (modifying) the rules every couple of years.

    But...that is just my 2c...LOL

Ok to clarify what I was talking about here....
drop all indexes .50 start perm CIC at .10
    and quit giving index back
This is mostly a visual change other than anything else
Now the index is "the best the car can run" as opposed to run better than by a half then go a little more.
This whole idea started 3 years ago in the "1000' Club" at Indy
Bret Kepner, and many racers and I were trying to explain Comp to a new drag racing fan who only know things like NASCAR. (take that intelligence for what you will)

I completely agree with Andy.. If left alone the soft classes will get CIC'd and the playing feild will be leveled.. that only reason I see NHRA making Softer index classes if to encourage people to run them.. The main reason I am Building an H/EA the index is soft enough that I can get in on the ground floor, and spend more money as the class gets faster.. But i agree there are some stupidly soft indexs out there.. But with any luck they will level out soon enough..
