NHRA seeks competitor input on delax boxes in Comp, Super Stock

Steve H. By the logic then everyone is all ready cheating.

My teams not. never has never will.

I agree with Brian Browell.

NHRA should treat it just like Nascar does restrictor plates. Give a switch to the driver when going through tech and that's what gets used. It uses two wires and can be mounted at location of choice, but everyone gets the same part, provided by NHRA, to create a level playing field.

We all have different ideas how to improve comp, butthe truth is comp is great, not perfect and there is no way to make it that way , so leave it alone .

Heres my take.........As an automatic guy who used delay boxes in Super gas. 1st Delay Boxes are only as good as you are its just a different bulb that you let go on. Second it opens up the possibility of crossover boxes like the bracket guys use. Now does that make it easier to leave if you are the faster car, hell yes it does. I think I saw in dallas this weekend that both top bulbs lit at the same time and the faster cars second bulb was delayed a bit. That really makes it easy. The way it is takes much more concentration to have a good light, or even a green light for that matter. This would greatly reduce the amount of red lights, which may be good for the fans, by making it easier with crossover abilities.

I vote no on this. Comp is a step above every other class out there. It takes skill and driving ability to race this class. Two things Im not sure if I have or not yet. Let the Super classes have thier delay boxes. Leave comp alone..

.400 pro tree. No need to delay.

What about this?

Do away with the need for any delay device. A Four Tenths Pro tree in Comp would eliminate the need for a delay. Still a drivers game that way. No added cost to us either. A five tenths full tree is ridiculous for cars that react as fast as comp cars do.

I looked at your car on the web site. That’s a nice hot rod.

Enlighten me on the bitch part. I haven’t made enough money {yet} to go as fast as you are.

My index is 7.91 I have a new SB2 and should be able to run .6 under this year. I would rather leave last so I can see the other car the whole time.

I started drag racing when I was 14 and now I’m old, so I’ve made a few passes. I had no idea that leaving last was a disadvantage until someone told me it was. From then on, I bought into the whole “distraction” theory. My goal for this year is to return to my old way of thinking. Leaving last is an advantage because:

1. Your opponent has the pressure of red lighting first.
2. When you are in a bad hot rod, you know you are going to reel them in at some point.

Total B.S.

Positively NO. It is absolutely outrageous that delay boxes would even be considered in Comp. Doing away with the long adjustable switch by having only one switch legal is a great idea. They [NHRA] control the ignition boxes in ProStock that way. You might not be able to control all the devices that will hide delay, but at least the most legal delay switch, the long arm thing ,will be gone.

As far as clutch gap goes, we have only raced clutch cars in Comp and the NO EFFECT comment is true....from .040 to .100. My partner has changed it and not told me, just to see the effect....nothing.

Last but not least, if for some bizarre reason NHRA allows delay boxes, then it only follows that we [clutch cars] can put an air piston cylinder on the clutch pedal. Kenny Reich did it 20 years ago and was told to take it off, but it worked perfect, being triggered by a button on the steering wheel. The use of the clutch was as per normal and the only time the air cylinder was in play was when you pushed the button, as the delay box would be activated when you let go of the button......on the top bulb.

RacerRex,
First off I don't respect anything u have to say since your hiding behind your wifes typing. You must be ashamed to sign your name Everybody has an opinion whether liked or disliked.

Make the tree come down with two bulbs @ 5 hundreths and the last bulb 4 hundreths and I will bet u that everybody will be looking for the quickest switch they can find to leave the line.

How often will NHRA check the use of the spec button after tech? It would be awful easy to swap buttons after you hit the return road with some quick release connectors. There will always be those who can find a way to cheat, and yes you can use a delay device with a clutch driven car. So unless they can police a spec button 100%, then whats the use (unless they choose an adjustible type button). The clutch driven cars will be the losers if that is the type button used. Delay devices are already being used! "Adjustable "AX" button", can be adjusted to cause up to a .400 delay, thats one of many.

Saw the note about it being ok to use a delay device for a clutch driven car. My rulebook says that electronics, pneumatics and hydraulics may in no way affect clutch operation...don't see a lotta wiggle room there.

I was just saying that you could use a delay device with a clutch driven car, the rule book would have to be changed if they allowed delay boxes. What does it say about anything that can create a delay being prohibited, since you have your rule book handy? Adjustible Buttons!!!

The delay box thing won't happen, I do see them making a change with the buttons though. The only thing with them will be the policing, somebody will find a way to cheat, there's too many smart racers out there! We're done with Comp for the time being, so I don't have any say in the matter to begin with. I found it interesting though as to who was making the push for the changes.

I vote NO.

I am glad to see NHRAtaking on this issue. It needs to be addressed. I've read the rule book regarding this issue many times and I believe the spirit of the existing rule is to prohibit delay devices of any type from being used. However over the past few years these "gray area" devices have made their way into competition, so now the rules need to be revised to address them.

There are a lot of good classes that openly allow the use of highly sophisticated delay devices as well as other driver aids. With the introduction of Top Sportsman and Dragster at many of the NHRA sanctioned events, now you can even leave on the top bulb and run six seconds. Comp doesn't need these devices.

I do complement NHRA into looking into this issue. I think the time is right to address this. Whatever NHRA chooses to do with the delay box issue, I will make the necessary changes to maintain competitive reaction times with the box or not. The only positive thing about boxes is that it would delete the "delay police". Does NHRA want to start pulling trans. pans? If not, there will always be a question. But I would vote to keep everything the same and have a spec button that everyone has to use. But then again, I can see the valve body guys already getting started with slower valve bodies, which is more money. If you don't take away the adj. type buttons, sooner or later someone will make a button with 1.000 delay in it, and then I would be top bulb racing. I vote no delay boxes, but either way, I will adapt.

This might seem to some an archaic way to help keep people from putting large delays into valve bodies, yet I think it might work out just fine. Require each car to mount another rear light on the car. The light is only powered by the trans-brake button. Therefore anyone standing behind the car will know exactly when the driver releases the trans-brake button and that can be compared to car movement. If you have a large delay built into the valve body, your car would stick out like a hard-on at a rest home.

I voted NO!
We do not need delay boxes.I have no problem with a spec button. After a run while at the scales or during fuel check an official can look in the car at the button. This won't be a problem. Also NHRA could randomly pick a
couple of racers and check to make sure the button hasn't been modified.NHRA could then come up with the appropriate penalty.

hello to all . I've been lurking around the site for a while now and the story about delay boxes finally sturred me up enough to post even though I am not a comp racer. I'M one those dreaded super class racers.. Things seem to be progressing now in comp the way they did in super racing a few years ago when they changed to LED'S.. aLL LED BULBS Did for Super Racing was make a whole lot of racers much more competitive than they could ever be because they couldn't make their car react. Do you notice that there are fewer repeat winners in super racing anymore.. Those that could drive and also had a good car won far more races back then.. Now its not much in the car anymore. So I believe that's what Nhra wants. They want less repeat winners. You will most certainly achieve this is you allow delay boxes. Allthough the car still has some say in comp I still think there are an awful lot of fast comp cars with bad drivers. you put a delay box in one of those and you will all of the sudden have a car capable of winning. I bet I know what Rampy's answer to this poll will be.. HELL NO!! Since this might be my only post if I get blasted for saying all this when its maybe not my place, I would like to say in the past I have always gone to watch comp qualifying and racing but its really weird to me to see comp racers wheel racing at the finish line and I must say alot of the racers don't do it so well.. (sorry ) I got a bad taste in my mouth last year when I saw a race between to b/a cars and the obivious faster car got left on a little and when he caught the guy at the 1000' he let completely off and the other guy went around him easily by 4 or 5 cars.. This was not a problem with the car.. He has a car capable of destroying the index. But decided not to get there first.. I've been seeing alot of that lately.. I guess my question is Why race if you are not going to win. It's weird to me that you guys work out who's going to win before the race (I'm assuming that some of that goes on) Are you trying to save it for a bigger payday of something? Clue me in on this please.. Thanks for letting me post on your site ..
